Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz and the Roots Perform ‘My Shot’ from the Hamilton Mixtape

The spirited performance brought the house down.

By Hayden Wright

The Hamilton Mixtape brought some of music’s biggest stars together to interpret the year’s biggest musical. Artists like Sia, Usher, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Nas, Wiz Khalifa and more gave their spin on the Tony, GRAMMY, and Pulitzer-winning material by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Among the Mixtape crew were Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz and the Roots, who used their platform on The Tonight Show to perform “My Shot” from the musical.

Rhymes wore a military-style winter coat with Revolutionary War detail, a subtle nod to the Founding Fathers with hip-hop flair. The performance transitioned through several scenes, opening in a boardroom and ending with a crowd of backup dancers and singers in a kind of nightclub setting. As with all things Hamilton, it stretches the medium and defies expectations.
