Kanye West Says ‘Apple Tidal’ Red Tape Killed Drake Collab

RIP, "Pop Style."

Drake’s juggernaut Views contains guest spots from Rihanna, Future, and PARTYNEXTDOOR, but two of his foremost rap contemporaries don’t appear on the track list: Jay Z and Kanye West.

That’s not because they didn’t collaborate in the studio. Jay and ‘Ye laid down verses for “Pop Style” but the song was excluded from the final cut of Views. In a characteristically honest moment, West told a Seattle crowd that label politics prevented “Pop Style” from reaching the masses.

“Y’all didn’t get, what y’all were supposed to get with me and Drake on this song because of some Tidal/Apple bullsh–,” Kanye said. “Every time I perform this song I think about this sh–. I think about the politics. I think about how hard I go for music, for art, for y’all.”

At first, Kanye says, Jay was hesitant to appear with Drake due to the Canadian rapper’s simmering feud with Meek Mill. When Kanye tried to patch things up (for the sake of art, natch) the dilemma turned to “some sh– about percentages on songs.” West suggests that the decision ultimately fell to Jay-Z, who blocked “Pop Style” despite Yeezy’s protestations.

In April, Drake himself weighed in on the decision with an air of disappointment:

“It didn’t play out how I wanted it to go,” he said. “Sometimes [Jay Z and I] just fall on opposite sides of the spectrum. It’s always mutual respect but sometimes it has to be from afar.”

Regardless of what happened with “Pop Style,” the fans have a potential Kanye-Drake joint album coming down the pipeline.
